The Gecko Tour is pleased to announce it will be holding the first ever Manilva Open at La Duquesa Golf Club.

La Duquesa GC is quietly hidden away behind the bustling port of Duquesa and being the only golf course in Manilva it was naturally chosen to host the event. This secret gem of a golf course is being bought back to its former glory, when it was once listed in the top 100 courses of the world.

Designed by Robert Trent jones Snr, the course opened in 1989 a good number of years after his earlier designs at Sotogrande, Las Brisas and Valderrama. La Duquesa might not be as highly regarded as the trio of top ranked iconic Spanish layouts, but it still displays a large number of RTJ design traits and spectacular views to entertain its players.

The Gecko Tour and the Manilva town Counsel have joined forces to bring a top professional golf tournament to Manilva and hope to make it an annual fixture on the Costa Del Sol sporting calendar. The tournament will be held on 3 – 5th March 2016 and will witness foreign players from across Europe, many with European/Challenge tour credentials, taking on the cream of the Spanish Professionals. Duquesa being the home course to local pros like the Canizares Brothers and the Quiros family, the level of competition is going to be as good as you will get on any major tour.

The event will be aired on Canal + TV (golf Spain), screened four times a week to 600.000 viewers along with Manilva TV and all of The Gecko Tour media partners will be covering the tournament.

The Gecko Tour Manager Calum Mcgregor actually lives in Manilva and is thrilled to have the players come to his home course.

“We are really excited about the event. I live in Manilva and of course working for the Gecko tour I wanted to bring something into my community. I spoke with the Golf course and they loved the idea and then my friend Dean Shelton got elected to the local council and they loved the idea, so we are all really excited to bring all our touring pros and introduce them to Duquesa. I play my golf here with the huge amount of Scandinavian members and they are really excited to be a part of the event. Our tour comprises of about 40% Scandinavian players so I am sure they will all have a great experience.

We have a lot of work to do over the summer to get everything into tournament mode but with everyone’s support I am super confident that we will be ready. I can already picture the locals cheering on the players, it’s going to be an amazing event. The final day is to be played on a Saturday and we are hoping that we will put on a good show for the locals who are golf mad.”

A prize giving ceremony and gala evening will round of the Saturday night and the following day the local residents will have an opportunity to play with the pros. The Gecko Tour will be holding a fun Charity Pro-Am day.

“We decided because it is such a local community effort that the Pro-Am will be used to raise funds for the local Autism/Children’s charity. We do have Ernie Els for Autism as our official tour charity but we decided that the local funds raised we would use for the local kids, I am sure Ernie Els wouldn’t mind, when I tell them I am sure they will support our decision, but if he gives us his support then we will donate the money to the local Charitable Society of St George on his charities behalf for them to distribute amongst the nearest to Manilva’s Autism charity’s.”
